Hurstpierpoint Map

Hurstpierpoint is 15km from central Brighton and one hour by train from London. It is an historic village, mentioned in the Domesday book, with many houses dating from the 18th century or earlier. The thriving High Street has shops ranging from baker’s, delicatessen, greengrocer’s and chemist to gift shops, clothing, and pubs and restaurants. There is even a small theatre, a tennis club, a public library and a doctor’s surgery in Hurstpierpoint. The community spirit in Hurstpierpoint is very strong with events held at the Village Centre as well as annual celebrations and street parties at Christmas and in the summer.

Holy Trinity Church was built in the middle of the 19th century on the site of a much older building. With its 130 ft spire, a landmark visible for miles around, the church was designed by Sir Charles Barry, architect of the Houses of Parliament. It contains an altar-tomb to a knight, believed to be Simon de Pierpoint, whose icon appears in the village sign.

Beyond the village

Half an hour walk from the village is Wolstonbury Hill, an iconic landmark set within the South Downs National Park. It’s a steep climb but the stunning and far-reaching views from the top make it all worthwhile.

Standing at the foot of Wolstonbury Hill is Danny House, an impressive Elizabethan brick mansion built in 1595. During World War I, Prime Minister Lloyd George rented Danny for four months. The Imperial War Cabinet met in the Great Hall, deciding on 13 October 1918 the terms of the armistice offered to Germany. US President Woodrow Wilson given authority to negotiate the Armistice.
